The original Shellum homestead is long gone, but the Godahl Store, where the homesteaders shopped, is still in business one mile to the east.

The Posse

Two weeks after a bank robbery in Northfield, a sheriff's posse killed gangster Charlie Pitts and captured the notorious Cole, Bob and Jim Younger in a gunfight south of LaSalle.  The gunfight, which took place along the Watonwan River in 1876, still ranks as  the most dramatic story in LaSalle's history.  The posse was made up of S.J. Severson, Thomas L. Vought, Benjamin M. Rice, George A. Bradford, Charles A. Bradford, W.W. Murphy and Watonwan County Sheriff James Glispin. Photo from the Minnesota State Historical Society.
